Counsel AI

Counsel: a legal AI that proposes, and a lawyer who decides

Counsel is included in the AI Premium Seat plan at $129.95 per seat per month, fixed. It lives in your matters, your morning and your Gmail. Every output is a proposal until a named person accepts it.

Five rules Counsel is built on

Proposals, never actions

No Counsel tool writes a deadline, a task, a time entry, a document or an email on its own. Every output lands in a review queue as a proposal, and a named person accepts it before it becomes a record.

Rules do the date math

When Counsel proposes a deadline it picks and cites the rule. The date itself is calculated by a rules engine that knows the federal counting rules, court holidays and your court closures. A date guessed by the AI never reaches the docket.

Your permissions are its permissions

Counsel reads Drive as the signed-in attorney, never as a system account. It cannot see a document you cannot see, and it cannot open the books unless you could.

Unreviewed drafts stay out of the client file

Accepted drafts are written to the attorney's private Counsel folder in Drive, not the shared matter folder, until someone moves them.

Source material is evidence, not instructions

Every document, email and note is wrapped as untrusted content. If a document tries to instruct the model, Counsel reports that as a fact about the document.

What Counsel does

All of the following is shipped and available today.

Morning briefing

At the hour you choose, Counsel sweeps tasks, court deadlines, calendar, matter health, inbox, commitments made in correspondence, timekeeping, trust and receivables, client silence and portal requests, then writes one ranked briefing. Follow-ups escalate over days and close themselves when resolved. If the AI is unavailable, the facts still arrive: the overdue list, the deadlines and the follow-ups are assembled without it.

Counsel in Gmail

From the add-on card: summarize the thread, draft a reply, triage, get matter status or ask a question. Proposals are accepted from the card after a privilege confirmation.

Court filing analysis

Upload a filing and get the deadlines it creates, each with the verbatim text it came from, plus Q&A over the document. Deadline suggestions arrive pre-checked but unwritten.

Drafting from your templates

Counsel reads the merge fields in your Google Docs templates and fills the approved document instead of writing from memory. Unknown fields stay as visible placeholders.

Google Docs, Sheets and Slides output

Drafts become real Google Docs with headings and formatting. Spreadsheets carry real formulas for derived figures. Slide decks include speaker notes.

Redlines, chronologies, privilege logs

Proposed edits show exactly what text is replaced. Chronologies and privilege logs are assembled from records the firm already holds.

Reads the files your firm actually has

Google Docs, PDFs, and Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in your Drive, including the older .doc, .xls and .ppt formats. If a file cannot be read in full, Counsel says so rather than quoting half of it.

Semantic search and OCR

Filings, notes and linked email are indexed automatically. Scanned PDFs, faxes and photographed exhibits get a real, quotable text layer.

Intake evaluation

A conflict check against your existing clients and parties runs first and blocks the rest if it finds one. Then Counsel scores the intake and recommends accept, decline or refer.

Email to tasks

Read an email and suggest tasks with context. You confirm before anything is created.

Billing help

Billing-readiness checks, time-entry triage, proposed time narratives, rate suggestions and trust-anomaly checks. All read-only against the ledger. AI cost is tracked per matter, and firms that choose to can pass it through to clients as a monthly expense entry at their own markup, reviewed before it is invoiced.

Citation checking

Cited authorities are extracted and mechanically classified as verifiable or not. Unverified authorities are listed on the proposal before you accept it.

Hearing and deposition prep

Prep packets assembled from the matter's own records, delivered with the briefing.

Governance built in

Consent gate
A firm must explicitly accept the data-handling disclosure. Until then every AI endpoint refuses.
Two-layer privilege scan
Nine categories (attorney-client, work product, common interest, protective order, settlement, sealed, health information, trade secret, confidential markings) are scanned on the device before anything leaves it, and again on the server.
Secret detection
Social security numbers, payment cards, private keys, API keys and bearer tokens are blocked before a request is sent.
Included usage and spending cap
Every Counsel seat includes a monthly amount of AI usage. When it is used up Counsel pauses until the next month, unless the firm has chosen to pay for more, in which case the extra is billed at the published usage rate. A firm-level monthly ceiling can be set on top. Both are checked before every request, and the Usage screen shows where the firm stands.
Full activity log
Every Counsel exchange records who asked, which matter, which model, what it looked at, what it cost and whether it declined. Administrators see usage and activity screens and an AI ethics audit view.
Retention sweep
Conversation transcripts are purged on a schedule you control.

Models are called from TaskWrangler's servers in Google Cloud, never from your browser. Your administrator can choose which model handles which kind of work, within published limits.

What Counsel does not do

  • No client-facing AI. The client portal has no AI assistant.
  • No automatic filing, sending or docketing. Every action is a human decision.
  • No AI-guessed dates.

Counsel is a tool used under a lawyer's supervision. It does not give legal advice and it does not replace the judgment required by your rules of professional conduct.
